In ESPN2 News’s nomadic travels across the New York boxing scene we have yet to find a gym superior to a hidden gem known as Supreme Team Boxing. A well functioning boxing gym is a chaotic thing of beauty. The Big Apple is one of the mecca’s of boxing and Supreme Team Boxing off 5 West 30 st. in Manhattan is boxing training at it’s finest. In this pugilistic sanctuary the art hitting and not getting seems to come easy to the gym disciples. The motto for the gym is aptly named “Too Easy” which is appropriate considering the ease at which both beginners and pro’s come to learn the Supreme Team style. The charismatic and friendly gym owner Coach Nelson teaches boxing in a safe and controlled environment that promotes technique over brute force.
Upon entering the cozy confines of Supreme Team you will be surprised to find white-collar types holding punch mitts effectively for their spar mates in the boxing ring. Ego’s in this gym are left at the door with the emphasis on helping one another as the underlying mantra. Coach Nelson was a highly decorated amateur trained by legendary NY trainer Milton LaCroix and his passion for the sport is infectious. Coach Nelson patiently instructs his pupils on the drills practiced at Supreme Team with great care, detail and compassion. Boxing on the surface appears to be a barbaric display of masculinity but Coach Nelson makes boxing more like a fun game of tag.
Smiles at Supreme Team are common among men, woman and children with the clients genuinely satisfied by learning the finer nuances of the “sweet science.” Most gyms will leave you to pound away at a punching bag alone with little to no instruction but everyday at Supreme Team is an education in fistic mastery. ESPN2 News highly endorses this gym and recommends it to anybody with a desire to truly learn boxing while getting in the best shape of their life.
