Erislandy Lara vs Jan Zaveck Odds have Lara as a 50 to 1 boxing betting favorite with 70% of boxing predictions on Lara. Zaveck, 35-3, 19 KO’s, was last on U.S. soil getting battered in a 12-round decision loss to hard punching Keith Thurman in April of 2013. Lara, 21-2-2, 12 KO’s, is ESPN2 News #13 ranked pound-4-pound fighter, his last win a dominating decision over tough veteran Delvin Rodriguez. Can the bomber Zaveck land a knockout punch on the elusive Cuban champion? ESPN2 News broke down the 154 Lb. W.B.A. title fight from Premier Boxing Champions. Erislandy Lara vs Jan Zaveck Odds have Zaveck as a +1400 underdog (Bet $100 to win $1400) at BOVADA.LV
Erislandy Lara – Boxer: The 5’9″ Lara is an extremely long-armed (75″ reach) southpaw with a stick and move style. Lara makes good use of his long jab by effectively controlling distance before launching punishing left uppercuts or crosses. Lara is heavy-handed with good leverage and hand-speed. Lara, 32, had a truckload of amateur fights in Cuba and is a true ring general that controls distance, pace and rhythm. Lara is a very difficult target to catch cleanly with his constant movement and clear ring vision. On the downside, Lara can get outworked and is excessively patient when trying to counterpunch. Lara has been on the deck a few times which raises questions about his chin. Lara’s best fights are over Austin Trout UD12, Alfredo Angulo KO10 and close losses to Paul Williams MD12 and Canelo Alvarez MD12. Erislandy Lara vs Jan Zaveck Odds have Lara as a -5000 moneyline favorite at BOVADA
Jan Zaveck – Boxer: The hard charging German is a solidly built 5’7 1/2″ (69″ reach) pressure fighter with excellent durability and a good left hook. Zaveck is a hard bodypuncher that can overwhelm opponents with his strength and tenacity. Zaveck, 39, is a veteran with 17-title fights and 272 professional rounds logged. On the downside, Zaveck is vulnerable to eating big punches and is a few years past his prime. Wear and tear is a concern with Zaveck along with his susceptibility to cuts. Zaveck has faired well against European competition but was easily beaten by American contenders Keith Thurman and Andre Berto. Zaveck was unable to win a round against Thurman and was stopped on cuts in the 5th by Berto. Zaveck has ordinary speed, can be outboxed and is wide with his punches. Zaveck is a natural welterweight that will be at a size disadvantage against Lara.
ESPN2 News Bottom Line: Lara occasionally has lapses in focus but we don’t expect him to overlook the dangerous German. Lara’s speed, footwork and near untouchable defense will help him win a clean sweep on the judges scorecards. With the southpaw Lara facing a headfirst brawler like Zaveck, it is likely that cuts will be a factor against Zaveck. Look for a headbutt to cause a referee stoppage with Lara well up on the scorecards.
