The 2016 Belmont Stakes favorite is Exaggerator at +180 betting odds after winning the Preakness Stakes in an upset win over Nyquist. The top Belmont Stakes contenders behind Exaggerator are Stradivari +500, Destin +600, Cherry Wine +800 and Creator at +1000. ESPN2 News breaks down the 148th running of the Belmont Stakes from Belmont, New York at 6:32 PM ET.

2016 Belmont Stakes Odds have Exaggerator +180 Moneyline ($100 Bet Pays Out $280) at BOVADA.LV

Post Position 1: Governer Malibu +1200

Expert Analysis: Nice longshot that has steadily improved. Good pedigree for distance. Jockey Joel Rosario won the 2014 Belmont Stakes on Tonalist as a +920 underdog to upset California Chrome. Has raced twice over the Belmont surface but

Post Position 2: Destin +600

Expert Analysis: 6th place finish in the Derby is a testament this horses potential. Appears to be outclassed but trainer Todd Pletcher won this race twice with Palice Malice as a +1500 underdog in 2013. Good bloodlines to handle the distance. Has been very inactive with the Derby his only race in nearly 3 1/2 months.

Post Position 3: Cherry Wine +800

Expert Analysis: Showed some nice late stamina to finish 2nd in the Preakness 3 1/2 lengths behind Exaggerator. Known as a “mudder” that benefited from some wet tracks in the Derby and Preakness. Might be on tired wheels in his third leg of the Triple Crown. Rookie Belmont jockey Corey Lanerie could be over his head.

Post Position 4: Sudden Breaking News +1000

Expert Analysis: A closer that showed decent endurance in the Derby to come up with a 5th place finish. Experienced jockey Mike Smith has won this race twice with Palice Malice his last conquest in 2013. Smith is an expert Belmont jockey that gives this horse value at 10-1 horse racing odds.

Post Position 5: Stradivari +500

Expert Analysis: Might be the best longshot despite having a small body of work. 4th place finish at the Preakness was a good test. 2-time Belmont champion Jockey John Velazquez will be racing on his home track and last won this race on Rags To Riches as a +500 underdog in 2007. 2-time Belmont winning trainer Todd Pletcher likes this horse.

Post Position 6: Gettysburg +3000

Expert Analysis: Front runner that is likely to tire badly down the stretch. Might be used as a decoy for trainer Steve Asmussen’s better contender Creator. Rookie Belmont jockey.  Dead money.

Post Position 7: Seeking the Soul +3000

Expert Analysis: Not much of horse to begin with and will be running on tired legs in his 3rd race in 5 weeks. Outclassed and will be piloted by a rookie jockey. Dead money.

Post Position 8: Forever d’ Oro +3000

Expert Analysis: Has a solid pilot in NY based jockey Jose Ortiz but he won’t have enough horse. Broke his maiden at 8 1/2 furlongs and will be going 12 at the Belmont making his gas tank a complete mystery. Outclassed.

Post Position 9: Trojan Nation +3000

Expert Analysis: Rookie trainer + jockey combo is a red flag. Finished 16th in the Derby and rider Pat Gallagher is arguably the worst jockey in this race. Saving grace are some nice bloodlines for distance. Outclassed.

Post Position 10: Lani +2000

Expert Analysis: Exaggerator is the only other horse that has run in all three Triple Crown races but is used to running often. Finished 9th in the Derby and about the same in the Preakness with a 6th place finish. Didn’t show much in the mud at the Derby and Preakness but has nice breeding for the distance and could surprise.

Post Position 11: Exaggerator +180

Expert Analysis: Finished 2nd in the Derby and followed with an upset win over his nemesis Nyquist to win the Preakness. A consistent performer that has finished in the money in his last six races. Ran both races in the slop making his ability to run on a dry surface a question mark. Jockey Kent Desormeaux was in rehab after the Preakness Stakes making his ability to perform another mystery.

Post Position 12: Brody’s Cause +2000

Expert Analysis:Finished 7th in the Derby but closed the race with some burst. Has a good jockey in Luis Saez and enough breeding to handle the distance. Doesn’t have much of a resume to suggest he can win the race.

Post Position 13: Creator +1000

Expert Analysis: A winner that has finished in the money in 7 of 9 starts. Had a horrific ride in the crowded Derby in a disappointing 16th place finish. Top flight NY based trainer Irad Ortiz Jr. is an invaluable asset that should help this baby finish in the money.
