Conor McGregor – Boxer: Rangy 5’9″ southpaw that could have 15+ pounds on Mayweather by fight night. Fast hands and feet with the ability to throw punches from unusual angles. Awkward boxer that frequently changes from southpaw to orthodox, making adjustments difficult for opponents. Has big power in both gloves with the ability to punch with great leverage. Has proven to be a tough Irishman with heart and a granite chin. On the downside, McGregor is a green novice with many technical flaws. The 28-year old paws with his jab, stands too upright, loads up punches, poor hand placement and limited in-fighting ability. Conor has bad balance and could go down even from a modest Mayweather punch. McGregor punches wide making it easy for a sharpshooter like Floyd to counterpunch. As a boxer McGregor’s best asset is his natural size advantage over Floyd but his ability to exercise that advantage in his pro debut will be negligible.
Floyd Mayweather – Boxer: The impeccably conditioned 5’8″ righty is a natural counterpuncher with long arms (72″). Floyd debuted as a Jr. lightweight but has developed into a solid welterweight through strength training. #1 pound-4-pound is a model of consistency having never had an off-night in 49 fights. “Money” can do it all in the ring: box, slug, counter, rip punches to the body or get nasty in the trenches. Floyd’s truly special gifts are his impeccable timing, sniper accuracy and precision counterpunching. Mayweather’s multi-faceted defense is built around his great anticipation and sense of distance. Mayweather almost got iced by Shane Mosley but has otherwise been durable with the exception of his brittle hands. Floyd might be a touch slower on his feet than in his prime but he is still the best in the game at 40-years old. As of this article Floyd has been out of the ring for 17+ months and could some rust in his comeback.
ESPN2 News Boxing Predictions: Mayweather will look every bit the pound-4-pound king against a rank amateur like McGregor. If the tough Irishman finishes on his feet against “Money” it will be on par with Rocky going the distance with Apollo Creed in Rocky I. McGregor has a punch and a prayer and will be lucky to land a glove on “Pretty Boy’s” unscathed mug. McGregor might get so frustrated and embarrassed that he will resort to dirty tactics and get disqualified. Bet on Mayweather to stop McGregor by the 6th frame or win by DQ.
